The BCMC is a group of like-minded individuals who participate in outdoor activities. The club was established in 1907 and in September 2019 reached a new milestone of 1,300+ active member accounts. The club organizes mountaineering, rock climbing and back country skiing trips throughout the year. The BCMC holds monthly socials, offers courses to members and represents the interests of mountaineers and back country skiers in British Columbia.

Situated north of Squamish, west of Whistler and Pemberton, and spanning approximately 300 square kilometers, the Pemberton Icefield holds the distinction of being the closest large icefield to Vancouver. However, accessing it is no small feat. Chris Barton, leading a BCMC group, first ventured to the icefield's edge in 2018. There, he recognized the area's untapped potential for outdoor activities—provided there was improved access. Over the course of three years, he collaborated with BCMC volunteers to establish a circular route around Little Ring Peak and to the icefield, offering enthusiasts an opportunity to experience the breathtaking scenery and natural wonders along the way.
Chris Barton, originally hailing from England, made the move to Vancouver in 2006. With a passion for skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, kayaking, and scrambling, he found his ideal playground in the diverse landscapes of British Columbia.
